About Margaret

Artist's Statement

The trick, I think, is to create a sense of place without being trite. This is true regardless of subject: Landscape, still life or abstract; photography or painting. The piece needs to be interesting to look at and yet not be overdone.

My photography training began in high school, where I worked in black-and-white and developed my own film. It was that physical touch with the materials that created a strong connection to my work that I don't think sending it off to a lab could ever achieve. Years later when I took time off of work to dedicate myself full-time to studying art, that immersion without distraction created that same sense of a connection to my work and to the places that I seek to represent.

I travel near and far with a camera and a sketchbook, sometimes recording on-site with a click or a few quick strokes and sometimes bringing it back to the studio and working for several weeks.

This is what I see.
